XC FALCON

The XC Falcon was the last model in the third generation Falcon range and while it visually appeared generally
the same as the previous XA and XB models, there were several significant under bonnet upgrades and customer
option alterations. The front end was changed again with a new horizontal grille design similar, but simpler
in design to the earlier XA model. The tail lights were altered again having, in a strange way, a similar
appearance to XB coupe tail lights. The XC can also be distinguished by the C-pillar rear air vents and
a slight window frame curve added to the rear doors on the 4-door sedan and wagon.
The XC model line up consisted of these major component and minor cosmetic changes:

- This model had to comply with new Australian Design Rule 27A (ADR 27A) restricting emissions
so Ford added the newly developed Crossflow head six cylinder engine as a standard fitting
across the entire XC series including the Fairmont GXL.
- The earlier Futura and GT (factory V8) lines were no longer available with the XC line-up now
adding the Falcon 500 Hardtop with the GS Rally Pack as standard, the Fairmont GXL as a
more-or-less attempt at a GT replacement and a factory custom van marketed as the Sundowner.
- The dashboard is completely redesigned and updated now with all metric gauges
across the entire range. Exterior badges are now all metric.
- In 1978 Ford rebranded the XC as the "XC1/2" which consisted of upgraded suspension
components across the range. A blue oval Ford badge was added to the front grille.
- The much outdated front bench seating was largely replaced with front reclining bucket seats
in most XC Falcon series except the Falcon Standard range. Floor transmission also replaced the
outdated column shift gear selection in most XC series except the Falcon Standard and 500. Power
steering was becoming a standard fitting in most cars at this time also.

The XC model was built in Australia from July, 1976 through to March, 1979 at two Ford plants -
Broadmeadows in Melbourne and Eagle Farm in Brisbane. Complete-Knock-Down (CKD) kits were shipped
to New Zealand for assembly at the Ford plant in Wiri, Auckland. Total production was 150,707 XC Falcons
across the entire series range.

FALCON Standard
The basic no-thrills, cut price series version for low-end market buyers carried plain 'Falcon' badges and came
without most of the standard factory extras found on the higher grade XC series. The sedan and wagon were also
assembled via CKD kits in New Zealand. There was no two-door hardtop offered in the XC Falcon Standard series
and the GS Rally Pack was not optional except for the commercial ute and van. This series now had the bench seat
foldaway armrest and rubber floor mats as standard fittings. A separate Falcon line was established for the taxi
sedan with its own model number.

FALCON 500
The 500 series remains the main and most common version in the XC range. Reclining Bucket Seats and Carpets
are now standard fittings with a Centre Console Armrest added if column shift gearing is installed. Better AM
radios now featured a swish lock-down aerial. Body Side Protection Mouldings were also a standard feature
across all body styles. There were no regular Falcon 500 Hardtops on offer with the XC model as they were
all now factory produced and marketed separately with the GS Rally Pack as a standard fitting (see below).
A separate Falcon 500 line was established for the taxi sedan with its own model number.

FALCON 500 GS HARDTOP
Falling sales figures for the two-door coupes in the later part of the 1970s saw Ford offer the Falcon 500 Hardtop
body style with factory fitted GS Rally Packs as standard equipment. Column shift was no longer optional here
but the 3-spd T-Bar automatic and the usual 302ci and 351ci (GT Power Pack) V8 engine options remained.

The flash GS configured XC Falcon 500 Hardtop had all the factory added goodies to pull in customers
on the ever decreasing sales of two-door coupes during the later 1970s. This one features the Ford
blue oval badge on the front grille indicating a late production car.

FALCON 500 SUNDOWNER VAN
"You're at home on the road" was the sales pitch for this factory built XC Falcon 500 Panel Van variant aimed at
the nomad traveller / surfer market of the 1970s. Over 1,100 Sundowners were built up to 1979 each sporting
an eye-catching set of full-body side stripes and decals. Unlike custom panel van options in the previous XB
model range, the Sundowner did not come with any built-in home comforts, these being left to the customer.
V8 and automatic transmission options were available along with the other usual options including the latest
AM/FM radio. There were three Sundowner colour decal choices: Red/Orange, Blue or Green - which
colour was selected depended on the base colour of the vehicle. Many of the Sundowners were painted in
the striking yellow Pine 'n' Lime (Code: P) colour which used the Red/Orange decals.

FAIRMONT
The top regular luxury option was still the Fairmont series by now fitted with many more convenience items
to fill the gap left by the demise of the Futura and performance based GT series. The XC Fairmont Hardtop, due
to falling sales, was offered with extra standard fittings not on offer with the sedan or wagon. The Fairmont series
was not available in the commercial ute and van range and was not factory taxi optional. Additionally, the GS
Rally Pack was only optional for the sedan and wagon and not optional for the hardtop body style which
already featured most of the GS items as standard fittings - except for some reason the rear panel side flutes.

The XC Fairmont range was easily distinguishable by the twin rectangular front headlights fitted to all
body styles. This coupe has the now standard bumper overriders and body-side protection mouldings.

FAIRMONT GXL
Designed as a Falcon GT replacement loaded with the usual RPOs and extras, the GXL had the standard Fairmont
fittings but added performance items like 4-wheel disc braking, alloy road wheels, LSD and the classic GS bonnet
scoops for a hybrid 'GT look-a-like.' Because power steering was a standard fitting, no column shift option was
available with the GXL but 4-spd manual floor shift was available plus the 302ci and 351ci (GT Power Pack) V8
engine options. The GXL was only available in the sedan range and not offered as a hardtop likely due to
the declining sales of that body style.

The XC answer to the defunct GT range was the Fairmont GXL which had all the usual GT fittings
except the engine which was just a six-cylinder unless a V8 was customer optioned. The example
above has a '5.8' engine badge indicating a 351ci V8.
